Which is the best reader for Everyman eBooks

Postby alexis » Mon May 18, 2009 3:48 pm

I have been using Chessbase which is great but if you want a free reader, does anyone have suggestions. Needs to be able to read cbh files and show variations/text/commentary, multiple games and analysis.

ChessBase Light is definitely an option http://www.chessbase.com/download/cblight2007/index.asp

They're produced in ChessBase for use in ChessBase (I'm working in ChessBase 9.0) and are checked to make sure that they work in all ChessBase formats, including Light.

Whether the ebooks work with any other program, I don't know. I guess if the programs were ChessBase compatible then they would. Then again, does anyone use anything but ChessBase now anyway? :)

Thanks Jonathan,

I imagine some users might be more comfortable with something non-proprietary e.g. Open Source software rather than good (not great by any means) but proprietary Chessbase

There are quite a few people in the world who use Chess Assistant and Convekta products. Many of us use both and live in near poverty as a result.

In mi opinion the best reader is... "ChessBase Reader" :D , not "ChessBase 9, 10" etc

When you buy a Fritz Trainer from ChessBase it includes the ChessBase Reader which for me is the most practical way to use CB files, unless you want to manipulate and modify these kind of files, in this case you have to use the full ChesBase or ChessBase Light.

When I contacted Everyman about readers for the ebooks they said they know there is a need for them but there is none availabe yet for their ebooks. Hopefully the admin can keep us posted on hand held readers. Since Barnes & Noble and Sony's came out there seems to be alot of them coming out.

As far as nook and kindle, I would rather see a Chessbase Reader version for iPad.

We have just launched our very own reader for the Iphone, Ipad and IpodTouch:

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/chess-vi ... ?mt=8&ls=1

As well as having our ebooks available in Chessbase cbv format we will from now on make them available also in pgn format (both formats will be supplied when you place an order) to be played on our very own pgn reader. We are converting all our already published ebooks into pgn format and when we go live (within 24hours from now) we will have 12 of our bestsellers already available in pgn format.

I hope this is just what you're looking!

This is really awesome! I only have two questions. Can those who have recently bought ebooks get the pgn versions too? And the iReader reads both formats?

Thanks,
Jay

The reader only reads pgn versions. For the standard version of our ebooks you still need a Chessbase product.

Regarding receiving pgn versions of ebooks you've already purchased - please send me an email to: info@everymanchess.com with a list of your purchases. We only have 13 ebooks in pgn at the moment, but this will of course expand. Hoping to have our 20 beststelllers available within a week, and after that we'll convert others.
